What are the UK fire extinguisher types?
October 27, 2023There are five main types of fire extinguishers in the UK:
- Water
- Foam
- Dry powder
- CO2
- Wet chemical
Water extinguishers are the most common type of fire extinguisher and are suitable for Class A fires, which are fires involving ordinary solids such as wood, paper, and fabric. Water extinguishers should not be used on electrical or Class B fires, which involve flammable liquids such as petrol, turpentine, or paint.
Foam extinguishers are suitable for Class A and Class B fires. Foam extinguishers are designed to smother the fire and prevent oxygen from reaching it. Foam extinguishers should not be used on electrical or Class C fires, which involve flammable gases such as hydrogen, butane, or methane.
Dry powder extinguishers are suitable for Class A, Class B, and Class C fires. Dry powder extinguishers work by coating the fire and preventing it from spreading. Dry powder extinguishers should not be used on electrical fires or Class F fires, which are fires involving cooking oils.
CO2 extinguishers should be used for Class B and Class C fires. CO2 extinguishers displace the oxygen in the air, which smothers the fire. CO2 extinguishers should not be used on electrical fires or Class A fires.
Wet chemical extinguishers are for use in Class F fires. Wet chemical extinguishers saponify the cooking oil, turning it into a soapy substance that extinguishes the fire.
Choosing the correct type of fire extinguisher for the type of fire you are likely to encounter is essential. You should also be aware of the limitations of each type of fire extinguisher.
In addition to the five main types of fire extinguishers, many specialist fire extinguishers are also available, such as metal fire extinguishers and electrical fire extinguishers.
It is essential to have your fire extinguishers serviced and inspected regularly to ensure that they are in good working order.
