What are the CCTV Sign Requirements?

The UK's data protection law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), sets out the requirements for CCTV signage, such as CCTV in operation signs and security camera signs. Under the GDPR, CCTV operators must inform people that they are being recorded, usually by displaying signs. The signs must be clearly visible and readable, and should include the following information:

• The fact that CCTV is in operation: This should be clear and unambiguous, such as using the words "CCTV in operation" or "This area is under CCTV surveillance".
• The purpose of the CCTV system: This could be for security, crime prevention, or other purposes.
• The identity of the CCTV operator: This could be the name of the organization or the person responsible for the system.
• The contact details of the CCTV operator: This should be so that people can contact the operator if they have any questions or concerns.

The size and location of the signs will depend on the specific circumstances. However, the signs should be large enough to be easily read, and they should be displayed in a prominent location where they are likely to be seen by people entering the area.

There are some exceptions to the requirement to display CCTV signage. For example, you do not need to display signs if the CCTV system is only used for internal purposes, such as monitoring staff in a workplace. However, it is still advisable to display signs in these cases, as it can help to reassure people that they are being monitored.

Can you have CCTV without warning signs ?

That is a good question. We were 95% sure that you are allowed to put CCTV signs up without actually having cameras, but we’ve sought clarification from the ICO – Information Commissioner’s Office (the ruling body for CCTV/data privacy).  They’ve confirmed that “Data protection law requires to put signs up if CCTV is in operation. There is nothing saying that you can't put signs up as a deterrent.
